UK CEO Pay Skyrockets in 2023 Amidst Worker Wage Protests
Research by the High Pay Centre revealed that top executives at Britain's largest firms enjoyed record pay in 2023, with median FTSE-100 CEO pay rising to 4.19 million pounds. This has sparked discontent among British workers who are striking for higher wages, highlighting the vast disparity in earnings.
Top executives at Britain's biggest companies enjoyed record pay in 2023, with nine firms offering packages exceeding 10 million pounds, research on Monday revealed, as British workers campaign for higher wages. The median pay for a FTSE-100 company CEO increased 2.2% to 4.19 million pounds last year, according to the High Pay Centre. However, CEO pay growth has decelerated compared to the past two years.
According to the research, FTSE-100 CEO pay was 120 times greater than the median full-time British worker's earnings. Various employees, including train drivers and family doctors, have taken industrial action over pay and conditions this year.
'The increase in average CEO pay reflects a small number of companies making large pay awards rather than widespread increases,' stated Luke Hildyard, director of the High Pay Centre. Hildyard also commented on Britain's business culture that prioritizes investor interests over those of workers, customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
Executive compensation at Britain's top companies has led to shareholder discontent in recent years, notably over the disparity between average worker earnings and CEO pay. However, some UK fund managers support granting boards more flexibility to retain top talent and prevent a brain drain to countries where executive pay is less scrutinized.
The highest-paid British CEO in 2023 was Pascal Soriot of AstraZeneca, who earned 16.85 million pounds. Following him was Erik Engstrom of RELX, with 13.64 million pounds, according to company financial disclosures. (Conversion rate: $1 = 0.7846 pounds)
