In its latest bulletin for August 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reports a resurgence in demand conditions following a sluggish first quarter of the financial year 2024-25. The apex bank identifies a visible revival in rural consumption, driven by increasing incomes and growing volume in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), signaling strong economic fundamentals.
Moreover, the RBI highlights a rise in rural savings, evidenced by both the number and amount in savings bank accounts. The easing of inflationary pressures has further spurred rural spending, bringing it closer to urban consumption levels.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation dropped to 3.54 per cent in July 2024, marking its lowest point in nearly five years. According to the RBI, this reduction has led to early signs of recovery in the FMCG sector, suggesting market stabilization, improved monsoon expectations, and higher budgetary allocations for the rural economy are setting the stage for volume growth.
The bulletin also mentions that these revival signs are expected to enhance private sector engagement in total investment. A boost in overall business sentiment is also observed, as reflected by a rise in the business confidence index by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), with an increasing share of firms predicting favorable economic conditions over the next six months.
High-frequency indicators for July 2024 show firm demand conditions, with e-way bills growing by 19.2% year-over-year. Toll collections increased by 9.4% YoY, and automobile sales saw a 9.5% YoY growth, particularly in the two-wheeler segment. Domestic tractor sales experienced modest growth, while robust double-digit growth was noted in vehicle registrations, across both transport and non-transport categories.
