Facing political heat over railway accidents, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized on Wednesday that the national transporter should not be a subject of political blame games, describing it as the lifeline of the nation.
Vaishnaw pointed out some disturbing trends in recent incidents and assured that detailed inquiries are being conducted. He stressed that these incidents should be taken seriously and efforts should be made to ensure that trains run efficiently.
Addressing questions about derailments caused by obstructions on tracks, Vaishnaw insisted that railways and defense are organizations that should remain above politics. In a separate development, the minister announced that 5,300 km of new railway lines were added in the past year, with ambitious future plans for project completions and employment generation in the sector.
