A regional conference focusing on "The New Social Contract for Social Justice – An African Trade Union Perspective" commenced today in Windhoek, bringing together senior trade union leaders, government officials, employers’ representatives, and academia from across the African continent.

Organized by the International Labour Organization’s Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV), the conference provides a vital platform for dialogue on how trade unions can shape a new social contract in response to evolving economic, social, and environmental challenges. Participants will discuss ways to promote inclusive economic policies, decent work, and social justice across Africa.

Maria Helena André, Director of ACTRAV, highlighted the significance of the event, emphasizing the need for a new social contract that addresses the needs of all workers, particularly those in vulnerable positions. "The success of this new social contract hinges on social dialogue and the inclusion of independent and representative workers’ and employers’ organizations," she stated.

As Africa undergoes political and economic transformation, driven by globalization, technological advancements, and the climate crisis, this conference aims to empower trade unions with the tools and knowledge needed to advocate for a just transition and inclusive policies.
