Wall Street Indices Slide Amid Inflation Concerns and Political Dynamics
Wall Street's main indexes fell after latest inflation data tempered expectations for a significant interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve. The odds for Kamala Harris winning the U.S. presidency rose following a debate, impacting stock performance associated with both Trump and Harris presidencies.
Wall Street's main indices experienced a decline on Wednesday as the latest inflation data moderated expectations for a significant interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve. Concurrently, the probability of Democrat Kamala Harris winning the U.S. presidency increased after a televised debate.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose marginally in August, but underlying inflation data revealed some persistence, which might deter the Federal Reserve from enacting a half-point rate cut next week. 'The Fed would have preferred softer numbers to justify a 50-basis point cut at the upcoming meeting, but the recent data likely supports a 25-bps cut,' stated Jason Pride, Chief of Investment Strategy and Research at Glenmede.
At the same time, market sentiment was influenced by political developments after Harris put her Republican challenger Donald Trump on the defensive. The pricing for a Trump victory declined, while stocks projected to benefit from a Harris administration, like solar stocks, saw gains. Chip stocks mitigated Nasdaq's losses with Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index rising by 1.2%, driven by Nvidia's 3.5% surge.
