India's Aviation Tax Relief: A Boon for Foreign Airlines

The decision to exempt foreign airlines from taxes on imported services in India has been praised by IATA. Previously, foreign airlines faced GST demands worth over Rs 10,000 crore, which could have hindered India's aviation growth. IATA views this exemption as a positive resolution to the contentious issue.

In a significant move, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has welcomed India's decision to exempt foreign airlines from taxes on imported services. This comes after months of contention where GST demands totaling over Rs 10,000 crore were levied on 10 foreign carriers operating in India.

Last month, IATA raised alarms about how these demands could potentially stifle India's burgeoning aviation sector. However, a recent decision by the GST Council to exempt these taxes and regularize past periods on an 'as is, where is' basis has provided much-needed relief.

Speaking at a conference, IATA chief Willie Walsh hailed the resolution as a positive development. He stressed that the prior tax demands were a growing concern that threatened to derail the industry's progress. IATA's Regional VP, Xie Xingquan, also noted the flawed application of GST on expenses incurred by foreign airlines and pointed out that India’s stance was unique and not practiced elsewhere globally.
