India is preparing for a monumental economic boost as the anticipated wedding season is expected to generate Rs 5.9 lakh crore in business, according to a recent study by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). An estimated 48 lakh weddings will take place nationwide in November and December 2024, leading merchants and retailers to brace for an unprecedented demand surge for wedding-related goods and services.
This year's wedding season is poised to surpass last year's figures, which included 35 lakh weddings and generated Rs 4.25 lakh crore. The increase is largely attributed to a rise in the number of auspicious dates, increasing from 11 last year to 18 this year. Delhi alone is expecting to host 4.5 lakh weddings, contributing Rs 1.5 lakh crore to the overall business, highlighting the capital's vital economic role.
Set to begin on November 12 and continue until December 16, the wedding season features a series of auspicious dates anticipated to elevate wedding-related spending. Acharya Durgesh Tare, Convenor of CAIT's Veda and Spiritual Committee, highlighted that the season will start on Dev Uthani Ekadashi and will feature propitious dates throughout November and December. This extended period is projected to boost business activities compared to previous years.
Echoing the sentiments of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Vocal for Local' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-reliant India) campaigns, CAIT's National Secretary General, Praveen Khandelwal, stated, "Consumers are increasingly prioritizing Indian products. Indian products have significantly penetrated the market, with their demand dramatically overshadowing foreign goods, heralding a promising future for locally-made items."
Breaking down the expected wedding expenses, CAIT National President BC Bhartia revealed that budgets range from Rs 3 lakh per wedding for 10 lakh ceremonies to over Rs 1 crore for high-end weddings. This diverse expenditure is anticipated to spur growth across sectors like clothing, jewellery, electronics, and food. Services such as banquet halls, event management, catering, transportation, and photography are also expected to witness a surge in demand.
An emerging trend this season is increased spending on social media services for wedding coverage, as couples aim to boost their digital presence during celebrations. Following the wedding season, festive events like Christmas and New Year are projected to maintain the economic momentum.
The second phase of the wedding season will recommence in mid-January 2025, offering another wave of business opportunities for traders and service providers.
