In a town near Cairo, local residents attacked a railway guard and his post following a tragic incident where a train claimed the lives of two children who attempted to cross a restricted intersection. The Egyptian National Railways confirmed the incident occurred in the town of Bilaydah, located in Al-Ayat city.
The situation escalated as an irate crowd converged at the level crossing, where the tragedy unfolded, leading to the assault of the guard responsible for securing the area and the subsequent torching of his office, officials stated. The condition and whereabouts of the guard presently remain uncertain.
Reports from local media indicate that the children were en route to school when the fatal accident took place. Train accidents are a persistent issue in Egypt, most recently evidenced by another crash earlier this month in southern Egypt, which resulted in one fatality and over 20 injuries. The government has been rolling out initiatives aimed at enhancing the safety and efficiency of the national railway system.
