A staggering revelation has come to light: 59 percent of Indian companies have encountered financial or economic fraud within the past two years, according to PwC's 'Global Economic Crime Survey 2024 - India Outlook'. This marks a substantial increase of 18 percent above the global average, underscoring a troubling trend in Indian corporate environments.

The survey identifies procurement fraud as the predominant threat, with 50 percent of respondents marking it as a significant issue—a marked rise from global concerns. While cybercrime remains the top global threat, the shift from customer fraud to procurement fraud as the primary concern in India signifies a changing fraud landscape.

Puneet Garkhel, a leading figure at PwC India, notes companies' ongoing battle with fraud using data analytics, though only 37 percent are using real-time payment monitoring effectively. The report advises strengthening processes and vendor reviews, and highlights ongoing challenges with corruption, which affects a significant percentage of businesses and demands vigilant compliance efforts.
