World Bank Approves USD 110 M Grant for Climate-Resilient Development in Kiribati
The Kiribati Kiritimati Infrastructure Project is designed to boost economic growth and improve access to essential services.

- Kiribati
The World Bank has approved a USD 110 million (AUD 175 million) grant to advance sustainable economic development on Kiritimati Island in Kiribati. This initiative aims to strengthen climate-resilient transport infrastructure and support broader infrastructure development in alignment with the Government of Kiribati's Kiritimati Island Economic Development Program.
Kiribati is highly vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels, creating significant socio-economic challenges. In South Tarawa, the capital, half of the country's population faces increasing pressure on public services, limited job opportunities, and high dependence on imported goods. The country's remoteness and lack of robust transport links further compound these issues by increasing costs related to supply chains, infrastructure development, and public service delivery. This project seeks to mitigate these issues by enhancing connectivity and access to essential services.
Project Goals and Infrastructure Development
The Kiribati Kiritimati Infrastructure Project is designed to boost economic growth and improve access to essential services. The six-year project will focus on strengthening transportation infrastructure, enhancing disaster resilience, and expanding economic opportunities while protecting the island's unique ecosystem.
Key project components include:
- Transport Infrastructure Upgrades: Improvement of road networks to enhance mobility and accessibility.
- Airport Enhancements: Upgrades to Cassidy International Airport, including runway repairs and safety enhancements to improve domestic and regional connectivity.
- Disaster Response Capacity: A dedicated emergency response component that allows for rapid disbursement of funds in response to crises or emergencies.
Government and World Bank Collaboration
The project will be implemented by the Ministry for Line and Phoenix Islands Development and the Ministry of Information, Communications, Transport, and Tourism Development, with World Bank support.
"This six-year project enables us to address the unique challenges faced by Kiribati, including climate change, economic development, and social welfare," said Hon. Teuea Toatu, Kiribati Minister of Finance and Economic Development. "This holistic approach ensures long-term sustainable benefits for the people of Kiribati."
Stefano Mocci, World Bank Country Manager for the South Pacific, emphasized the significance of this investment: "This is a unique opportunity to unlock economic potential while safeguarding the island's natural resources. The World Bank stands with the Government of Kiribati in their efforts to achieve sustainable development."
With improved transport infrastructure, enhanced disaster resilience, and a strengthened economy, Kiritimati Island is poised to become a more sustainable and connected hub, benefiting all of Kiribati.
