Thousands of Belgians flooded the streets on Thursday in a significant protest against the new government's proposed pension reforms, marking the start of a multi-day strike that brought the nation's air traffic to a standstill. A Brussels airport spokesperson confirmed 430 flights were canceled, noting that this disruption to air traffic would be limited to just one day.

Demonstrators, wielding signs with slogans like 'We're not lemons,' and showcasing Latin phrases in homage to Prime Minister Bart De Wever's penchant for Latin quotes, made their stance clear. The strike also threatened to paralyze public transit and postal services, with firefighters and military personnel joining the fray.

The contentious pension reform plan rewards those extending their careers beyond the retirement age with 35 years of service, while imposing penalties on early retirees lacking the same tenure. This new framework is notably less beneficial for lower-income earners compared to the previous model, which offered a fixed amount based on career duration. Prime Minister Bart De Wever's government, a five-party coalition, faced eight months of dialogue before its formation on February 3, integrating right-wing, centrist, and socialist factions, including the party Vooruit.
