Tanzania is pushing for the removal of trade restrictions on green gram imports by India, as requested by Tanzanian Deputy Prime Minister Doto Mashaka Biteko during a recent Pulses Conclave organized by the India Pulses and Grains Association.

Biteko also called for the extension of the existing duty-free supply agreement for pigeon peas, which is set to expire in March. He highlighted that Tanzania is a major producer of high-quality green gram, and lifting restrictions would benefit both nations.

As bilateral trade between the two countries reaches USD 7.5 billion, Tanzania has exported significant quantities of pigeon peas. They are urging India to extend the agreement until 2027 to facilitate a stable supply chain, crucial for Tanzania’s agricultural sector.
