The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and 123Carbon have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at developing interoperability between their respective Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) registries. This initiative seeks to increase transparency, prevent emissions reporting errors such as double issuance, and streamline certificate management across SAF registries.

Key Elements of the Collaboration:

  1. Unique Identifier and Data Alignment: IATA and 123Carbon will create a standardized unique identifier and align relevant data points to facilitate seamless information exchange between registries.
  2. Information Exchange Process: The partners will establish a robust process for exchanging information to eliminate the risk of double issuance of SAF certificates.
  3. Dispute Resolution Mechanism: A clear dispute resolution process will be implemented to address and resolve potential conflicts efficiently.

Leadership Perspectives:

Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA's Senior Vice President for Sustainability and Chief Economist, emphasized the importance of transparency and user trust in driving the success of SAF registries. She welcomed broader industry participation, encouraging all SAF registry providers to collaborate towards global interoperability.

Jeroen van Heiningen, Managing Director of 123Carbon, highlighted the partnership's potential to foster integrity and trust within the Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) market across various transportation modes. He noted that this collaboration would enable SAF providers, airlines, freight forwarders, and corporate entities to manage their SAF certificates digitally without concerns about double issuance.

Call for Industry-Wide Participation:

IATA and 123Carbon intend to engage with other stakeholders in the SAF ecosystem to expand this initiative, aiming to establish global interoperability across all SAF registries. The collaboration is expected to set a new standard in the aviation sector's journey toward decarbonization by ensuring transparency, efficiency, and trust in SAF transactions.
