In January, the wholesale price inflation, largely influenced by a decrease in food prices, especially vegetables, registered a slight decline to 2.31%, according to government data shared on Friday. This is a slight decrease from December 2024's 2.37% but significantly higher than January 2024's 0.33%.
The inflation rate specifically for food items eased from 8.47% in December 2024 to 5.88% in January. Notably, vegetable inflation, which was high at 28.65% in December, saw a sharp reduction to 8.35%. Meanwhile, inflation in the eggs, meat, and fish categories also decreased to 3.56% from 5.43% the previous month.
Looking forward, ICRA predicts the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) will average 2.4% in FY2025, with a potential rise to 3% in FY2026. However, economists like CARE Ratings' Rajani Sinha caution about the potential impact of global trade uncertainties and the depreciating rupee, which could put pressure on non-food components of the WPI.
