Linguistic Clash Stirs Tensions at Karnataka-Maharashtra Border

Karnataka's Transport Minister, Ramalinga Reddy, publicly supported bus conductor Mahadevappa Hukkeri, who was allegedly assaulted in Belagavi for not speaking Marathi, reigniting a long-standing linguistic feud between Karnataka and Maharashtra. Reddy assured the public that the state stands by Hukkeri.

The assault occurred when a Marathi-speaking youth reacted violently after Hukkeri requested ticket payment in Kannada. Five arrests have been made, but Reddy expressed dissatisfaction with the limited police action, advocating for the arrest of all attackers involved. Meanwhile, the minor girl involved filed an indecency complaint against Hukkeri, which many believe is intentional.

This incident has once again brought attention to the volatile language border disputes in the region. Karnataka's Home Minister, G Parameshwara, called on Maharashtra's authorities to take decisive action, emphasizing the need for immediate police intervention to prevent the escalation of such conflicts.
