German Stocks Surge Amid Political Shift
German stocks rose considerably as Friedrich Merz-led conservatives won the national election. The STOXX 600 index climbed, with real estate and utility stocks leading gains. Merz is set to become the next chancellor but faces challenging coalition talks, potentially delaying necessary economic policies.
German stocks emerged as notable gainers in Europe on Monday as the conservative party led by Friedrich Merz won the national election, marking a significant political shift.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose by 0.2% at 0930 GMT, with real estate and utility stocks ascending more than 1.5%. Germany's major index saw an increase of 0.8%, spearheaded by arms manufacturers, while the mid-cap index surged by 2.3%, and small caps advanced by 1.1%.
Merz is anticipated to become Germany’s next chancellor following the victory, though complex coalition talks lie ahead, prompting concerns over delayed economic policies necessary for revitalizing the economy, as noted by Lale Akoner, lead global market analyst at eToro.
