Delhi Airport Shakes Up Operations: T2 Shutdown for Upgrade

Terminal 2 of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport will shut down for four to five months starting April, moving its 15 million capacity to Terminal 1. A runway is also closing for upgradation to CAT III B, prepping for low visibility operations. Terminal 3 will expand international capacity.

In a major operational shift, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is set to temporarily shut down Terminal 2 for four to five months starting April, according to airport operator DIAL. This closure is part of a broader improvement initiative that includes upgrading one of its runways.

The airport, which serves as a critical aviation hub with a total annual passenger handling capacity of 109 million, will redistribute the 15 million capacity of T2 to Terminal 1. Alongside, a runway closure is slated for an upgrade to CAT III B standards, enabling safer operations under low visibility conditions.

Furthermore, to accommodate increasing international traffic, a section of Terminal 3 currently used for domestic flights will convert to international operations, boosting its capacity from 20 million to 32 million passengers annually. This development aims to meet projected demands over the next five years.
