Amid escalating concerns over sustained high prices of spot liquefied natural gas (LNG), Indian gas companies grapple with potential impacts on domestic demand and the financial performance of city gas distribution (CGD) firms. A report from JM Financial emphasizes that Gujarat Gas faces acute exposure due to significant reliance on spot LNG purchases.

According to the report, spot LNG prices, currently at around 18% of Brent crude prices, challenge Indian firms by remaining significantly above the historical average of 12% experienced before the Russia-Ukraine conflict. These elevated prices raise alarms for companies dependent on spot market acquisitions to fulfill supply requirements.

Despite a noted decrease in Europe's annual LNG demand, recent reports indicate a resurgence in European imports driven by harsh winter conditions and depleted inventories. Expectations for increased global LNG supply over the next decade are seen as crucial to mitigating demand-driven price volatility, alongside the potential revival of Russian gas supplies to support market equilibrium.
