The Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, is set to engage with export promotion councils on Thursday regarding potential trade challenges with the United States, according to an industry insider. The meeting comes amidst US threats of imposing reciprocal tariffs that could impact India's significant trade relationship with America.
This dialogue is crucial as it follows Goyal's recent trade discussions in Washington with his American counterparts. Exporters plan to voice concerns over these proposed tariffs and the ongoing negotiations concerning a bilateral trade agreement, which could affect sectors like textiles, handicrafts, and leather.
Significantly, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has urged India to open its agricultural sector, a sensitive area due to its implications for local farmers. Despite recent talks, no agreement has been finalized on trade tariffs, as confirmed by Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal during a separate briefing to a Parliamentary panel.
