As of January 31, 2025, more than 161,000 entities across India have been officially recognized as startups by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). This was confirmed by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in a written response to the Lok Sabha.

Maharashtra and Karnataka have emerged as frontrunners in this startup surge, with 28,511 and 16,954 firms recognized, respectively. These numbers underscore the growth and potential of the startup ecosystem in these states.
