Surge in Startup Recognition Across India
Over 161,000 entities have been recognized as startups by the Indian government as of January 31, 2025. Maharashtra and Karnataka lead the count with 28,511 and 16,954 recognized startups, respectively. As of January 31, 2025, more than 161,000 entities across India have been officially recognized as startups by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). This was confirmed by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in a written response to the Lok Sabha.
Maharashtra and Karnataka have emerged as frontrunners in this startup surge, with 28,511 and 16,954 firms recognized, respectively. These numbers underscore the growth and potential of the startup ecosystem in these states.
The recognized startups are eligible for various benefits, including tax incentives through the Startup India action plan. This initiative aims to provide substantial support to budding enterprises, fostering innovation and driving economic growth in the country.
