TRAI Warns Against Rising Cyber Frauds: Protect Your Information

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) cautions against cyber frauds involving impersonation, fake documents, and threats. These scams misuse TRAI's identity to coerce individuals into divulging personal details or transferring money. TRAI advises verifying communications and reporting scams through official channels for safety.

In a recent advisory, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has alerted the public to a worrying increase in cyber frauds and financial scams that deceitfully use its name. According to the Ministry of Communications, these frauds involve impersonation via calls, messages, fake documents, and counterfeit letterheads.

TRAI emphasized that any such communication allegedly from them is unauthorized. A notable scam involves 'digital arrest,' where fraudsters pose as TRAI or law enforcement officials, falsely accusing individuals of telecom violations and coercing them for money under the guise of fines or bail.

The regulator stressed that TRAI never contacts customers regarding mobile disconnection and has not authorized third-party agencies to do so. It advises citizens to verify suspicious messages, avoid sharing sensitive data, and report frauds via 1930 or the cybercrime website.
