In a decisive move to democratize Artificial Intelligence, Union Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday that the government is intensifying its focus on skilling in AI. The minister was speaking at the AI Impact Summit 2026 pre-event, emphasizing the strategic spread of AI Data Labs beyond traditional tech hubs.

Minister Vaishnaw underscored India's commitment to a human-centric and inclusive AI growth strategy. He noted that this approach ensures the technology's accessibility, drawing parallels with globally recognized technologies like UPI. By establishing an agreeable governance framework, India aims to solve population-scale challenges with tech solutions.

The minister also highlighted a strategic pivot towards domain-specific AI models, marking a shift from general-purpose large-scale models to smaller, specialized solutions. He cited healthcare and material sciences as key areas under India's Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, advocating for 1,000 specialized models to effectively address sector-specific issues.
