Apollo Eyes Majority Stake in Atletico de Madrid
Apollo Global Management is in discussions to acquire a significant stake in Atletico de Madrid. The deal, valued at 2.5 billion euros, involves purchasing shares from the club's CEO, chairman, and Ares Management. The acquisition highlights the trend of private equity firms entering the sports industry due to stable revenues.
Apollo Global Management is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire a controlling interest in Atletico de Madrid, one of Spain's premier soccer clubs. According to sources aware of the matter, the deal could involve purchasing stakes owned by the club's CEO, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, chairman Enrique Cerezo, and investment fund Ares Management.
Though Apollo may not initially secure a majority stake, it is expected to do so in a later phase of the transaction. The current management is anticipated to remain in place, with existing owners potentially retaining part of their holdings. Valued at approximately 2.5 billion euros, this transaction marks another step by private equity firms into the sports world, attracted by its consistent revenue potential.
Anonymous sources cautioned that the deal is not final, with the possibility of falling through. Atlantic Holco holds about 70% of Atletico, while the remaining shares are with Quantum Pacific. Apollo, which manages over $800 billion in assets, aims to inject capital for squad investment and stadium projects, amidst its broader $5 billion sports investment plan.
