India's journey towards economic independence takes center stage as the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry outlines the country's shift from a traditional cost-focused strategy to a resilience-driven approach. Speaking at the UNCTAD Ministerial Roundtable, the minister emphasized the importance of self-reliance, known as 'Atmanirbharta', in countering global supply chain vulnerabilities.

The Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative reflects this paradigm shift, with a thorough review of sectoral supply chains and an openness to deviating from conventional economic theories to achieve self-sufficiency. According to the minister, India's willingness to invest in supply chain resilience has not only buoyed job creation but also strengthened domestic production capacity.

Acknowledging unavoidable external challenges like geopolitical tensions and pandemics, the minister highlighted India's swift response in vaccine production as a testament to the country's capability. He underscored the nation's efforts to expand free trade agreements, fostering trustworthy international partnerships while advancing domestic growth and infrastructure development.
