The Ministry of Railways has greenlit the construction of a fourth railway line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu, estimated at Rs 757.18 crore. The Southern Railway announced this development, which aims to boost connectivity in the region.
Currently, the Tambaram-Chengalpattu section experiences frequent congestion, affecting punctuality, due to its heavy utilization by suburban, long-distance, and freight trains. The new line is expected to ease this congestion and foster a shift from road to rail transport, benefiting both passenger and freight traffic.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has approved this crucial project, which will be executed by Southern Railway under 'Plan Head-15 (Doubling)'. The proposed line is expected to enhance travel experiences for commuters including daily travelers, students, and professionals by improving operational efficiency and reducing travel time.
