A devastating incident has occurred in Arunachal Pradesh's Anjaw district as a truck carrying 22 workers from Assam's Tinsukia district plunged into a remote gorge on December 8, leading to at least 18 fatalities, officials confirmed on Thursday. The tragedy unfolded on the Hayuliang-Chaglagam Road, in a region notorious for its difficult terrain and limited connectivity.
Defence PRO Lt Col Mahender Rawat relayed that the sole survivor managed to reach the Chipra General Reserve Engineer Force camp, revealing that the truck fell off a cliff. The Indian Army, alongside local authorities, has initiated a comprehensive search and rescue operation, retrieving bodies with belay ropes in the face of challenging visibility due to dense foliage.
Multiple agencies, including the Army's Spear Corps, NDRF personnel, and local police, are engaged in efforts to trace the remaining individuals and provide assistance. Despite harsh conditions, authorities are making every effort to gather information and update families, with the Anjaw and Tinsukia administrations coordinating on-ground activities to tackle this crisis.
