India has initiated talks with the European Union through the World Trade Organisation (WTO) about the newly announced EU import quotas on certain ferro-alloy elements. These commodities are crucial for the iron and steel industry, and the quotas could significantly impact Indian exports.
According to the WTO, India's interest in exporting these elements is substantial. The import duties under these safeguard measures will apply to imports exceeding a specific limit, potentially affecting Indian exporters for three years.
The upcoming consultations, proposed to be held virtually between 16 and 19 December 2025, underscore ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement between India and the EU, aiming to strengthen trade relations.
