This cultural dimension may explain why students simultaneously expressed openness toward AI accessibility while resisting the idea of replacing human therapists entirely. The findings suggest that students view AI as acceptable when it supplements human care but problematic when it threatens to eliminate interpersonal support.
AI adoption linked more to expectations and emotions than demographics
The research found no statistically significant differences in awareness, trust, readiness, or preferences based on gender or academic level. Male and female students, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate participants, demonstrated broadly similar attitudes toward AI-assisted mental health tools.
This, as the findings suggest, may reflect a shared generational familiarity with digital technologies among university students. Exposure to smartphones, apps, and online platforms appears to have created relatively consistent levels of technological engagement across demographic groups.

Students weigh practical benefits such as accessibility and cost reduction against concerns about empathy, privacy, and authenticity.
Researchers point out that this complexity should shape future policy and implementation strategies. Universities seeking to introduce AI-supported mental health services must address emotional and ethical concerns alongside technical performance.
Lastly, the study also calls for stronger ethical safeguards, including transparent data governance, privacy protections, culturally sensitive design practices, and digital mental health literacy programs.
