The central government has revitalized numerous pre-independence airstrips, converting them into operational airports for airlines under the Udan scheme, the Lok Sabha was informed on Thursday. This initiative aligns with efforts to enhance infrastructure and promote regional air connectivity.

Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu emphasized the scheme's goal of making air travel accessible and affordable for all, announcing its extension by a decade. Since 2014, operational airports have increased from 74 to over 160, illustrating significant progress in aviation accessibility.

In response to a query, Minister Naidu stated that state governments must provide land for greenfield airport construction. He indicated the possibility of conducting feasibility studies if a proposal from Tamil Nadu is received. Major airlines, including smaller carriers in the Northeast, are actively participating in the Udan scheme.
