India's power sector witnessed significant achievements in 2025, with record-setting energy generation, enhanced distribution infrastructure, and a move towards sustainability. The Ministry of Power reported meeting a record power demand of 242.49 GW in 2025-26 and cutting energy shortages down to a mere 0.03%, a stark improvement from the 4.2% shortage in 2013-14. The nation's total power generation capacity surged to 509.743 GW, thanks to considerable investments in non-fossil fuel sources.

Renewable energy saw robust growth, with 178 GW added to the grid since 2014, including 130 GW from solar and 33 GW from wind. Per capita electricity consumption climbed to 1460 kWh by 2024-25, a 52.6% increase from the previous decade. To support economic expansion, 13.32 GW of new coal-based thermal capacity was initiated in 2025-26, while domestic coal stocks were targeted to rise to 66 million tonnes by March 2026.

The Ministry also advanced coal allocation methods through the Revised SHAKTI Policy, improving business ease. The hydro sector saw developments with new commissions and approvals, while the National Electricity Plan 2023-2032 focused on amplifying infrastructure for future demands. Strategic investments in the transmission and distribution networks, including smart meters and enhanced technical efficiencies, underscored efforts for optimal power availability nationwide.
