Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Masato Kanda met with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele in Honiara to reaffirm and expand ADB’s long-standing support for the country’s economic development, including deeper cooperation on public financial management reforms and major investments in infrastructure, renewable energy, and human capital.

“ADB supports Solomon Islands’ vision for sustainable and inclusive economic growth, driven by a vibrant private sector,” Mr. Kanda said.

“We are committed to working with the government on transformative projects in critical sectors, including energy, infrastructure, and human capital development.”

One of ADB’s Largest Pacific Portfolios

During the meeting, Mr. Kanda and Prime Minister Manele reviewed ADB’s current project portfolio in Solomon Islands, valued at approximately $350 million, making it one of the Bank’s largest commitments in the Pacific region.

The portfolio includes investments aimed at strengthening economic resilience, improving connectivity, expanding energy access, and supporting long-term development priorities.

Mr. Kanda noted that ADB stands ready to provide increased assistance, including flexible budget support, to help Solomon Islands deliver on its national development agenda.

Flagship Investment: Tina River Hydropower Project

ADB’s support includes major renewable energy infrastructure, most notably the Tina River Hydropower Project, a cornerstone initiative expected to boost affordable, clean power supply for the capital.

Mr. Kanda visited the project site to observe construction progress on the 15-megawatt hydropower plant, which is projected to meet around 70% of Honiara’s electricity needs once operational.

ADB’s financing for the multi-donor project includes:

  • $18 million loan from concessional ordinary capital resources

  • $12 million grant from the Asian Development Fund

The project is expected to play a critical role in lowering electricity costs, reducing reliance on imported fuels, and supporting sustainable economic growth.

ADB Opens Full Resident Mission in Solomon Islands

In a major milestone for the partnership, Mr. Kanda officially opened a full ADB resident mission in Solomon Islands, significantly upgrading the country office first established in 2008.

The expansion reflects ADB’s strengthened commitment and will enhance its ability to work directly with government institutions, local communities, and development partners.

The increased in-country presence is expected to improve project delivery, responsiveness, and long-term collaboration.

Investing in Youth and Education

Mr. Kanda also visited the newly completed Honiara campus of the University of the South Pacific, which was supported through ADB financing to expand and modernize educational infrastructure.

The project delivered:

  • Upgraded learning facilities

  • New equipment and training resources

  • Integration of clean energy sources

Meeting with students, Mr. Kanda highlighted the importance of investing in youth development to ensure Solomon Islands has the skills and human capital needed for future growth.

Strengthening Long-Term Development Cooperation

ADB’s expanded engagement signals continued focus on key development priorities, including:

  • Renewable energy and energy security

  • Critical infrastructure upgrades

  • Public financial management reforms

  • Education and skills development

  • Private sector-led inclusive growth

The visit reinforces ADB’s role as a leading development partner for Solomon Islands as the country advances toward more sustainable and resilient economic progress.
