Democratic Senator Mark Kelly has issued a call to suspend the 18.4-cent-per-gallon federal gasoline tax through October 1, aiming to mitigate the financial burden on American drivers.
The situation arises as gas prices experience an upward spike, attributed to the escalating conflict in Iran. According to AAA, a national travel organization that monitors fuel prices, the cost per gallon has surged by 35 cents, reaching a national average of $3.32 over the past week.
Political analysts caution that if gas price increases persist, it could negatively affect Republican chances in the upcoming November midterm elections, where control of the U.S. Congress will be contested.
