Mounting Arrears: Maharashtra Contractors Standstill Looms

The Maharashtra State Contractors' Association (MSCA) has issued an ultimatum to the Mahayuti government, warning of a complete work stoppage if dues exceeding Rs 96,000 crore are not settled by April 7. The group represents contractors engaged across various development sectors.

Last year, protests resulted in Rs 20,000 crore being cleared, yet current liabilities have climbed back to the original amount due to accumulating bills from ongoing and completed projects. Significant arrears span multiple departments, including Rs 35,000 crore under the Jal Jeevan Mission and Rs 29,000 crore with the Public Works Department.

According to MSCA president Milind Bhosale, approximately three lakh contractors are impacted by these pending dues. State fiscal pressures, fueled by election-year welfare expenses, have intensified the government's cash constraints despite major borrowing efforts. Officials highlight a tight fiscal environment affecting capital expenditures and payment schedules.
