The Highway to Tomorrow: Spectrum Allocation for Autonomous Vehicles
India's Telecom Regulatory Authority (Trai) has released a consultation paper on spectrum allocation and pricing norms for vehicle communication, a significant step towards autonomous vehicles. The initiative, involving several key industry players, aims to improve safety by enabling real-time information exchange, potentially reducing road accidents.
In a landmark move towards modernizing transportation, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) unveiled a consultation paper aimed at setting spectrum allocation and pricing standards for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication. This development signals a significant stride in India's journey to adopt autonomous or self-driven cars.
The Department of Telecom has tasked Trai with developing a regulatory framework that includes spectrum assignment, authorization, and pricing for roadside units integral to an intelligent transportation system. Key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, and technology firms like Qualcomm are collaborating to bring these advancements to India.
The integration of V2X technology, which allows vehicles to communicate wirelessly with their environment, could drastically enhance road safety. By utilizing a designated 30 MHz spectrum for cellular-V2X technology, the initiative promises reduced road accidents and improved traffic management, addressing the critical issue of human error in driving for a safer future.
