A senior official of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) was killed, while his wife and driver sustained injuries after their car collided head-on with a goods vehicle in Chhattisgarh's Korba district in the wee hours of Friday, police said. The accident occurred around 1 am on the Korba-Chotia Road under Bango police station limits when the victim, Arun Kumar Tyagi (58), was travelling to neighbouring Madhya Pradesh to assume charge at his new posting, an official said. Tyagi, who was serving as general manager of the SECL's Gevra coal mine project, had recently been promoted and appointed director (technical) at Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh. Tyagi and his wife Seema left Gevra for Singrauli on Thursday night and near Bajari turn on National Highway-130, their car collided with a goods vehicle, the official said. He said that the couple and their driver, Kailash Ahir, sustained injuries and were rushed to a hospital in Bilaspur, where Tyagi died within hours. The driver of the goods vehicle sustained minor injuries and was also admitted to a hospital, the official said, adding that a case has been registered.
