Uttar Pradesh Police launched an extensive campaign against drunken driving over the weekend, leading to fines being issued to 2,654 motorists following checks on nearly 70,000 vehicles, as per an official statement. The initiative resulted in approximately Rs 2.65 crore in traffic penalties.

The operation, executed over May 9 and 10, was overseen by Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna. District nodal traffic officers and circle officers collaborated with Transport Department officials, aiming to curtail alcohol-influenced driving, particularly on weekends when incidents surge.

Analysis of the state's road accidents indicated that drunken driving accounted for a significant percentage of incidents from 2023 to 2025. The campaign saw dedicated teams positioned at toll plazas, equipped with essential tools and ensuring compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act. The effort also included addressing women's safety concerns while travelling.
