Miraculous Sea Rescue: 11 Survive Florida Plane Crash
A private plane flying from the Bahamas crashed at sea off Florida's coast, but all 11 people aboard survived. They were rescued from a lifeboat by a joint Air Force and Coast Guard operation. The survivors endured five hours in the raft before being airlifted to safety.
In a dramatic rescue, all 11 individuals aboard a private plane that crashed at sea off central Florida were saved by a coordinated U.S. Air Force Reserve and Coast Guard effort. The incident occurred 80 miles from Melbourne, Florida, as the plane emitted a distress signal activated by an engine failure.
Major Elizabeth Piowaty's crew responded swiftly to the SOS while on a training mission. They spotted the life raft amid an approaching thunderstorm and supplied vital provisions until a rescue helicopter could retrieve the survivors, who had spent five grueling hours afloat and were visibly distressed.
Captain Rory Whipple detailed the rescue, executed with limited fuel, as the survivors were hoisted aboard the helicopter in nine lifts. Investigations into the plane crash, reportedly due to engine failure, are underway by Bahamian authorities, while the survivors received medical attention at Melbourne Orlando International Airport.
