Surging Ahead: A New Fiscal Year Boost for the Auto Industry
The domestic passenger vehicle dispatches witnessed a 25.4% increase year-on-year reaching 4,37,312 units in April, indicating strong demand despite high commodity prices. Utility vehicles, passenger cars, and two-wheelers contributed to this growth, driven by the momentum created after last year's GST rate cuts.
The domestic passenger vehicle market recorded a significant leap in the first month of the fiscal year 2026-27, with dispatches rising by 25.4% year-over-year to touch 4,37,312 units in April, as reported by industry body SIAM.
Despite pressing concerns over high commodity prices due to turmoil in West Asia, the automotive industry has maintained a strong demand trajectory. Notably, utility vehicles showcased a 21.5% growth, while passenger cars and vans saw increases of 32.7% and 14.4% respectively. The two-wheeler segment also marked a robust 28.4% rise.
SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon noted that the industry's double-digit growth in passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, and two-wheelers is a continuation of the momentum seen in the latter half of fiscal 2025-26. These figures underscore a resilient demand amid global economic challenges.
