Skyrocketing smartphone prices in India are set to disrupt purchase plans for more than half of the potential buyers during the festive season, stretching from July to December. Trakin Tech and Techarc report that this could lead to a significant decline in annual sales.
The study disclosed that 54% of intended smartphone purchases are at risk due to these price hikes. Many consumers indicated they would either wait for prices to drop or consider buying refurbished models. The report highlighted that if current price trends persist, sales could potentially fall to 115-120 million units, a stark reduction from the 136-138 million units sold last year.
The price surge stems from global cost increases in NAND flash and DRAM memory chips required for smartphones and a depreciation of the rupee against the dollar, affecting import costs. High demand from AI investments further exacerbates this trend, with business strategies aiming at higher average selling prices also influencing the market.
Arun Prabhudesai from Trakin Tech emphasized that Indian consumers desire better devices at affordable rates, and the industry must adapt. The scenario is further complicated by stricter consumer financing options, necessitating innovative solutions, especially for consumers in lower economic tiers.
