Global Food Prices Slightly Drop in May
Food prices saw a slight decrease of 0.2% in May compared to April as reported by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. The FAO Food Price Index recorded an average of 130.8 points. Additionally, global cereal production for 2026/27 is projected to drop by 2% to 2.982 billion metric tons.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reported a slight decrease in world food prices this past May, recording a 0.2% dip from April levels. The FAO's Food Price Index, which includes a variety of globally traded food commodities, recorded an average of 130.8 points for the month, a marginal decline from April's revised figure of 131.0 points.
Alongside the monthly report, the FAO provided projections for global cereal production. For the 2026/27 period, global cereal production is anticipated to reach 2.982 billion metric tons, marking a 2% decline compared to the previous year.
These findings reflect ongoing fluctuations in the global food market, highlighting challenges in agricultural production and pricing within the sector.
