Iraqi Prime Minister's Strategic Washington Visit Aims to Boost Economic Ties
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi aims to strengthen strategic ties with the United States, focusing on economic cooperation. His Washington visit intends to foster investment and economic reforms while managing diplomatic nuances with Iran. Challenges include reducing reliance on oil and tackling internal issues like unemployment and corruption.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi plans a significant visit to Washington in mid-July, aiming to reinforce strategic relations with the United States by prioritizing economic, trade, and investment cooperation, a government spokesperson revealed on Tuesday.
According to spokesman Haider al-Aboudi, the visit seeks to enhance the Iraqi-U.S. partnership premised on shared interests. Al-Zaidi, who assumed office in May, has highlighted rebuilding Iraq's economy, attracting foreign investments, and tackling corruption as his primary goals.
As Iraq endeavors to diversify from oil revenue dependency, al-Zaidi faces the daunting task of controlling Iran-backed militias and managing complex diplomatic relationships, especially with the U.S. and Iran. His Washington visit comes amidst challenges, including high youth unemployment and aging infrastructure.
