The Census operation is gradually progressing across different parts of the country, combining digital technology with traditional door-to-door surveys to ensure comprehensive coverage and accurate data collection.
Self-Enumeration Open in Kerala and Nagaland
Residents of Kerala and Nagaland can currently participate through the Self-Enumeration facility, which remains available until June 30, 2026. People can submit their details through the official Census Self-Enumeration portal before field operations begin in their states from July 1 to July 30. Officials have advised residents who complete the online process to keep their Self-Enumeration Identification Number (SE ID) ready. During field visits, enumerators will verify the information using this ID to complete the Houselisting and Housing Census process.
Families that choose not to use the online facility will still be covered through regular house-to-house visits conducted by Census staff.
Field Operations Underway Across Several States
House listing activities are currently being carried out in Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Puducherry and Uttar Pradesh. At the same time, several states and Union Territories have already completed the first phase of Census activities.
The Houselisting and Housing Census exercise conducted between May 16 and June 14 concluded successfully in Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Rajasthan and Jharkhand. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi area also completed the process during the same period, while Punjab wrapped up its operations on June 13. So far, 23 States and Union Territories have completed the first phase of Census 2027. These include Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Uttarakhand and several others across the country.
Digital Tools Meet Traditional Enumeration
For the first time in India's Census history, data collection is being carried out using a dedicated mobile application. The digital approach is designed to improve efficiency and accuracy while retaining the familiar door-to-door enumeration process that has been central to previous Census exercises. During the Houselisting and Housing Census phase, enumerators collect information related to housing conditions, household characteristics, available amenities and assets owned by families. The survey is based on a structured questionnaire containing 33 notified questions.
Authorities have reiterated that all information gathered under the Census Act, 1948, remains strictly confidential and is used only for statistical analysis and development planning. Residents in states and Union Territories where Census operations are underway have been urged to cooperate fully with enumerators and actively participate in the nationwide exercise. As Census 2027 progresses, the combination of technology-driven data collection and extensive field verification is expected to provide one of the most comprehensive snapshots of India's housing and household landscape.
