Mauritania and Kuwait are all set to strengthen their cooperation in environment, communication and culture. Kuwait has signed agreements on these sectors with Mauritania recently as President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was paying a state visit to the Gulf country. The Mauritanian leader, who left Kuwait City on April 24, met with Kuwaiti ruler Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Much investments in these sectors are yet to be announced.

Mauritania and Kuwait have been tied by several agreements that date back to 70s but ties between the two countries witnessed a period of distrust during the regime of former Mauritanian President Maaouya Ould Sid’Ahamed Tayeh who had vexed Kuwait by condoning its annexation (August 2-5, 1990) by Iraq’s late President Saddam Hussein, as reported by The North Africa Post.

Later, Mauritania and Kuwait reinstated their diplomatic relations and Kuwait pumped out billions of dollars in the North African country. The Gulf country lent USD 34 million to Mauritania to support a power project in the South-East region.
