With a plastic ban in force in Tamil Nadu, the State-run 'AAVIN' Wednesday launched an initiative to collect used milk sachets from customers in a recycling drive. The move by the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers Federation, popularly known as 'AAVIN', was aimed at ensuring that the used sachets were not discarded in the open affecting the environment, AAVIN said in a release.

According to the initiative, AAVIN customers can give away the used sachets at a cost of 10 paise each to any of the company's retail outlets, parlours and zonal offices. Holding that customers of other companies were throwing the used packets in the open, AAVIN also appealed to private dairy companies to take steps to collect the used milk sachets from their respective customers.

For customers who seek clarification on the initiative, AAVIN has come out with toll free helpline -- 18004253300, the release said. The ban on use of plastic items, including non-biodegradable carry bags, came into effect in January following an announcement by the state government in June 2018 aimed at gifting "a plastic-free" state to future generations.
