The New York Mets announced Wednesday that outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will have season-ending surgery on both heels.

The surgery has not been scheduled, but will be done in two parts -- each concentrating on one foot.

The team placed him on the disabled list on Tuesday.

Cespedes, 32, returned Friday from a two-month DL stint caused by a hip flexor injury, but he told reporters Saturday he is battling calcification in both heels and will need surgery at some point to fix the issue.

But with the Mets in the cellar of the National League East, Cespedes will start the eight- to 10-month recovery process sooner and be ready earlier next year.

Assistant general manager John Ricco told reporters Monday that there is no rift between the team and Cespedes, adding that the team was not aware of the severity of the outfielder's heel issues.

"I don't think it's a disconnect," Ricco said. "It's not like he's been saying this for months and we haven't been listening. For the first time, to our knowledge, when he was considering the surgery was when he said that."

Cespedes played in just one game after returning from the DL, going 2-for-4 with a home run and a walk in a 7-5 win over the New York Yankees on Friday.

The 32-year-old is batting .262 with nine home runs and 29 RBIs in 38 games this season. He played in just 213 games total over the previous two seasons with the Mets and is owed nearly $60 million over the next two seasons.
