TMC MP Mausam Noor on Wednesday pressed the central government to adopt substantial reforms in the nation’s admission and examination systems, highlighting the surge in student suicides.

During Zero Hour, Noor presented alarming data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), indicating that students constitute eight per cent of total suicide victims annually, with the figure exceeding 30,000. She stressed the importance of immediate attention and action to address this crisis.

Noor pointed out that 35 per cent of suicides occur in the 18-30 age group, with over 1,100 children under 18 years old ending their lives due to exam failures in 2022, and more than 1,400 young adults committing suicide over unemployment. She highlighted the severe competition faced by students, with disparities in available seats for major exams like NEET UG and JEE MAINS causing significant stress. Noor called for urgent government intervention to support the youth and reform the educational system.
