Delhi LG Forms Committee to Regulate Coaching Centres After Tragic Incident

Delhi LG VK Saxena has formed a committee led by the chief secretary to regulate coaching centres in the city. This move was prompted by a tragedy at an Old Rajinder Nagar coaching centre where three students died. The committee will address regulation, exorbitant rentals, fire safety, and other student issues.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has taken decisive action in response to a tragedy at a local coaching centre. On Wednesday, he formed a committee, led by the chief secretary, to frame guidelines for regulating coaching centres across the city.

The catalyst for this move was an incident that claimed the lives of three civil services aspirants, who were trapped in a flooded basement library at an Old Rajinder Nagar coaching centre. This alarming event highlighted the need for stricter regulations.

The newly-formed committee includes representatives from coaching institutes, students, and officials from relevant departments. They are tasked with addressing a wide array of issues including exorbitant rentals, fire clearances, and the desilting of drains. The committee will also devise a plan to gradually relocate coaching institutes to more organized areas in Narela and Rohini.

In addition, the chief secretary is set to develop a regulatory framework for these institutions, aligning it with guidelines established by the government of India. Meanwhile, the police commissioner has been instructed to crack down on property owners who charge exorbitant rents.

To ensure transparency and better oversight, the LG has also ordered the creation of a portal with Aadhaar-based login credentials for all coaching institutes and their students.
