Two Anganwadi workers in Karnataka's Koppal district have been suspended following an incident where they were caught taking back eggs served to children during a midday meal. The misconduct came to light after videos of the act went viral on social media.
The Workers reportedly filmed and photographed the eggs being served to the children at the Anganwadi, but then retrieved the eggs from the plates shortly afterward. Eggs are a mandated part of the midday meal program in government schools and Anganwadis.
On August 9, the Women and Child Development department issued an order suspending both workers for dereliction of duty. Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar confirmed that immediate action was taken upon learning of the incident. She also announced further measures, including the suspension of the Child Development Project Officer and a notice to the Deputy Director of Koppal district. The Minister emphasized that providing nutritious food and quality education is fundamental to Anganwadi's mission and warned that any similar misconduct in the future would result in compulsory retirement.
