NIT Student Booked for Stalking and Threatening Classmate

Police have charged a National Institute of Technology (NIT) student for allegedly stalking and threatening a female classmate. The complaint, lodged by the woman from the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department, led to an FIR. Protests erupted, demanding safety measures, and an investigation is ongoing.

Authorities at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) registered an FIR against a student on Thursday for allegedly stalking and making threats towards a female classmate, as confirmed by the local police.

The complaint was filed by a student from the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department, detailing harassment spanning several days. Superintendent of Police, Hamirpur, Bhagat Singh Thakur, disclosed that the accused youth had recently misbehaved with the complainant, using indecent language and issuing threats.

Subsequent to the complaint filed through the dean, student welfare, NIT, the police invoked sections 78 (stalking), 79 (intent to insult modesty of a woman), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the student. The incident triggered a student protest demanding strict action and safety assurances, culminating in the first-year students skipping classes. An investigation is currently underway.
