Gauhati University has temporarily shut down two boys' hostels following violent clashes between students after last week's students' union election, according to a senior official on Tuesday.
The university management has lodged a police complaint and pledged strict measures against those involved in the violence, which injured at least 12 students.
Vice-Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta indicated that the clashes erupted between RCC 1 and RCC 2 hostel boarders on Friday night, following the declaration of the Post-Graduate Students' Union (PGSU) election results earlier in the day.
The polling on September 26 was peaceful, but unfortunately, the Friday night incident marred the university's reputation, leaving approximately 12-13 boys and two security personnel injured, one of whom is in the ICU, Mahanta stated.
The decision to temporarily close RCC 1 and RCC 2 hostels aims to foster a healthy academic environment, Mahanta emphasized, ensuring that the boarders are relocated to other hostels to continue their classes seamlessly. He affirmed that those behind the clashes would not be spared.
In last week's PGSU elections, key positions were filled by candidates supported by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the Asom Chatra Parishad.
